Hamza On The Web is a personal portfolio showcasing the work of the Palestinian activist artist Hamza Abu Ayyash. As a multimedia artist, Hamza utilizes a variety of art forms such as painting, sculpting, video, photography, projections, and graffiti to express topics surrounding regional identities and mythical heritage of the area. Born in Lebanon, Hamza lived in Tunisia, Jordan, and settled in Palestine in 1997 where he got a bachelor's degree in interior design from An Najah University in Nablus in 2004. Hamza later obtained a master's degree in autonomous design from KASK in Ghent in 2021.
Artist's Bio:
I am a Palestinian-Jordanian multimedia artist born in Lebanon, with a creative practice rooted in resilience and cultural hybridity. My early life was shaped by movement — growing up between Tunisia and Jordan, settling in Palestine after the Oslo agreement, and later living in Belgium — experiences that deeply inform my exploration of identity, heritage, and public space through art.
With over two decades of experience across visual arts, design, and digital media, I work at the intersection of calligraphy, graffiti, performance, and technology. My art often reinterprets traditional Arabic script as a dynamic visual language, blending ancient forms with contemporary digital tools to reflect modern narratives of resistance, memory, and belonging.
I hold a Master’s degree in Autonomous Design (Social Design) from KASK – The Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, Belgium, where my thesis explored how Digital Calligraffiti can creatively intervene in Western historical monuments and symbols — using the city of Ghent as a case study.
A pioneer in Digital Calligraffiti, I co-invented the Infl3ctor , a live performance tool for real-time digital calligraphic projection, together with Michael Ang and Public Art Lab Berlin. This innovation has enabled participatory, networked art interventions across Europe and the Middle East, including projects in Berlin, Ghent, Ramallah, and Beirut.
My diverse body of work spans illustration, sculpture, film, photography, video editing, and interactive installations. I have collaborated with international institutions such as the Palestine Film Institute , Public Art Lab Berlin , and Voem VZW , and have led workshops, performances, and exhibitions globally — from Italy and Australia to Germany, France, and the UAE.
From 2015, I have served as Palestine's Calligraffiti Ambassador, bringing this unique fusion of tradition and modernity to new audiences. I also founded OpenSpace Productions in Jordan in 2023, continuing my mission to create socially engaged, meaningful art that bridges cultures and communities.
Currently based in Jordan, I work as a freelance artist and designer, offering custom creative services across digital and physical mediums. My practice remains committed to storytelling — visually, politically, and poetically — always seeking new ways to write beauty into public space.
